Welcome to the online portfolio of Julian Barkway

My main passion is landscape photography, where I aim to avoid the obvious or clichéed and instead try to present a more idiosyncratic view of the landscape. I generally use a large-format film camera to capture my images, preferring the soft light to be found on overcast days, or in shady areas, to the full-on 'golden-hour' light that landscape photographers traditionally utilise.

Working with a large format view camera, seemingly something of a retrograde step in ths era of digital capture, demands a slower more contemplative approach to photography. A single image may take on average twenty minutes from set-up to pressing the shutter-release, providing many opportunities for re-evaluation and refinement of one's original ideas along the way.

Patience, observation and thinking ahead are the main qualities necessary for this form of photography - which, perhaps, is one reason why it is becoming increasingly popular amongst landscape photographers.
